On the 31st July, keepers welcomed Kochi the red panda to Himalayan Heights in the Foot Safari... the first Red Panda to join Woburn Safari Park since 2019.

The young male arrived safely from a wildlife collection in Bordeaux, France following months of careful planning, veterinary preparation and international coordination.

Kochi's move was recommended by the EAZA Ex situ Programme (EEP), helping to support the long-term conservation of the struggling species.

Meet the newest arrival, Kochi!

Born on 21st June 2025, Kochi was identified as a suitable future breeding partner for Woburn’s resident female, Mali, through the coordinated European breeding programme.

The recommendation was informed by the genetic and demographic needs of the managed population. 

Once the move was agreed, teams in both countries began preparing for the transfer, coordinating the veterinary requirements, transport arrangements and international documentation.

Before travelling, Kochi underwent the required veterinary health checks and was safely secured in a suitable travel crate for the journey. The teams also coordinated the health certification, CITES permits, import notifications, customs clearance, transport permissions and biosecurity requirements needed to move an endangered species safely between France and the UK.


Preparing for his new home 

Ahead of Kochi’s arrival, the Animal Encounters team carefully prepared the red panda house to support a calm and comfortable settling-in period. Red panda keeper, Harry, also designed and built a brand-new, purpose-built double nest box to welcome Kochi.

Alongside the elevated resting spots and quiet areas, this provides both Kochi and Mali with choice and control over where they spend their time as they settle and the introduction process begins.

Kochi will settle into the specially designed red panda house while keepers closely monitor his behaviour, appetite and activity levels. 

Protecting an endangered species...

Red pandas are classified as endangered, with habitat loss and poaching continuing to threaten wild populations. By participating in the international breeding programme, Woburn Safari Park plays an important role in safeguarding the future of this remarkable species.

Keepers are delighted to see Kochi demonstrating his confidence and curiousity as he settles in. Visitors will love spotting him through the viewing window at his house in Himalayan Heights, as he explores his new surroundings and becomes familiar with his new home.
