Squirrel Monkey Baby Joins the troop
There’s a new face in Woburn Safari Park’s lively Guianan squirrel monkey troop! Born on December 18th to first- time mum Gizmo and proud dad Murphy, the baby marks an exciting milestone for this group.
Murphy, who joined the park last year, has had quite the journey to becoming a dad. His introduction to the troop was a careful and gradual process, as he needed time to adjust to his new surroundings and companions. Thanks to the keepers’ dedicated efforts and the troop’s naturally social nature, Murphy is now a confident and relaxed member of the group.
Gizmo, known for being an attentive and loving mother, has already taken to caring for her little one with ease. The baby can be spotted nestled securely on her back as she wonders around the enclosure. Squirrel monkeys are social animals, and this troop is no exception. Many members of the troop have welcomed their own young and have already stepped in to lend a hand, creating a supportive and nurturing environment for the newest arrival. The troop’s close bonds and Gizmo’s strong maternal instincts mean keepers can maintain their hands-off approach, allowing the group to naturally raise the baby together as they would in the wild. As the baby grows, visitors can look forward to seeing those first curious steps away from Gizmo’s back, as it begins to explore the vibrant world of the troop.
The Squirrel Monkey
Young squirrel monkeys typically start exploring on their own between 5 to 10 weeks of age. During the early weeks, mum remains highly protective, staying close to guide and nurture her baby as it begins to learn independence. Gradually, she will allow more distance, encouraging the baby to build confidence and fully explore its surroundings on its own.
Guianan squirrel monkeys, while listed as "Least Concern" on the IUCN Red List, still face challenges in the wild due to habitat loss. Welcoming new arrivals like this baby highlights Woburn Safari Park’s ongoing commitment to conserving and protecting this fascinating species.
