The perfect chill out

During the summer, some of the elephants at Woburn Safari Park have found the perfect way to cool off.. a delightful mud bath!

Tarli, Woburn’s youngest elephant, was seen enjoying herself recently, rolling around in the mud and having a blast.

Mud baths are not just fun for elephants, they are incredibly beneficial too. Despite their tough appearance, elephant skin is quite sensitive and can easily get sunburnt. Mud acts as a natural sunscreen, protecting their skin from harmful UV rays.

Additionally, the mud helps to keep parasites at bay and provides essential minerals like salt and calcium. It also offers protection against bug bites, which are more common in the summer.

While Tarli was indulging in her spa day, she was also getting all the skin care she needed. Mud baths are a fantastic source of entertainment for elephants too, and Tarli was clearly having the time of her life!

A special birthday this September

The keepers at Woburn Safari Park are excited to celebrate Tarli’s 10th birthday this September who was born on the 24th September 2014 to mother Damini and father Raja.

In 2018, she survived the aggressive elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV), which is fatal in 80% of cases. Thanks to regular blood testing, her EEHV infection was detected early, and she received life-saving antiviral and plasma transfusions.

You can spot Tarli in the Road Safari paddocks along the re-entry route, she stands out as she is the smallest Asian Elephant at the Park. Read more about the elephants.
