Woburn Safari Parks New ‘Pig’ Stars!

Woburn Safari Park is thrilled to introduce two new residents who have been making a ‘pig’ impression on everyone they meet! Say hello to the two new Middle White pigs - already stealing hearts with their friendly personalities. These two females are the first Middle White pigs Woburn has ever had, making their arrival extra special!

Two new pigs digging with snouts

Keepers at Woburn Safari Park proudly welcomed two Middle White pigs on October 1st, arriving from Jimmy’s Farm. While Woburn has had pig residents before, the Middle White pig is a brand new breed to the park, making their arrival particularly special. It's also the first time the keepers have had the opportunity to work with this rare breed, and they’re excited to care for and learn more about the breed. The lively newcomers have quickly settled into their new home, eagerly exploring their enclosure, digging around, and have already built a strong bond with keepers.

To make their arrival even more special, the park invited Facebook followers to help choose the perfect names for the pair. The name options were Ronny and Randall, Wilbur and Winnie, and Winston and Marty. Thanks to the wonderful votes from visitors, the winning names have been chosen.

Without further ado, meet… Wilbur and Winnie!

Wilbur and Winnie have already made quite the impression on both keepers and visitors, charming everyone with their bright, friendly personalities. The two Middle White pigs are often spotted digging around their enclosure and staying close to their keepers, making them a delightful new addition to the park. Although they're still small now, Middle White pigs can grow to around 200kg, with a sturdy, stocky build.

The two females have quickly earned the title of "chatterboxes" in the Farmyard Friends area. Their curious neighbours, the Shetland pony and the Abyssinian donkey, have already come over to welcome the new arrivals to the park.

As the first of their breed to arrive at Woburn Safari Park, Wilbur and Winnie are extra special to both the staff and guests.

Middle White pigs are a rare breed, listed as a priority species by the Rare Breed Survival Trust, making their presence at the park important for conservation. Catherine Doherty, Head of Animal Encounters, shared: “Winnie and Wilbur are an excellent new addition to the Woburn Safari Park family. They are a very special breed, the Middle White, which is rare and crucial to preserving the diversity of our native breeds.”

White pigs hold historical significance for Woburn. The park has ties to a large white pig variety, once known as the Woburn breed. John Russell, the Duke of Bedford, imported a white boar that contributed to the development of the Chester White, a lineage closely connected to Woburn’s history.
