The excitement of the new arrivals at Woburn Safari Park continues in Australian Walkabout, with six tiny wallaby joeys sticking their heads out of their mother’s pouches.

Wallabies are marsupials or pouched mammals. This means that they are part of a group of animals who give birth to undeveloped young, who are then moved to a pouch of skin to develop further. In wallabies this pouch is on the underbelly of the animals and contains four teets to feed the young.

The youngsters will first begin to poke their heads out of the pouch at around five months old.

Then, at around eight to nine months the new arrivals will be spending most of their time out of the pouch, but they'll continue to rely on and feed from their mother until they are around 12 months old.
