Overview

The striated caracara is a bird of prey found within the Falkland Islands and Tierra del Fuego. They frequent open lowlands and can often be seen along the rocky coastline.

Scientific name: Phalcoboenus australis

Despite being part of the falcon family, the striated caracara spends most of their time on the ground and they will use their powerful legs to turn over rocks or pieces of driftwood to find food such as crustaceans.

This bird of prey shows very little fear of humans and is very clever and curious. They are even known to enter urban areas to scavenge from people!
