Overview

Found in South America, Agouti are from the rodent family. They are well equipped to avoid predators, with long legs and hoof like claws that enable them to become good swimmers. This is also aided by their sharp hearing and good sense of smell, that prepares an agouti when a predator is near.

Overall their population is high and they are classed as a pest in South America as they are often found in farmers’ fields enjoying their crops.

Azara's Agouti facts

Agouti's have strong teeth that allows them to break open tough nuts. They are the only mammal that can crack open the Brazil nut.
Agouti pair-bond with each other for life. After a three month gestation period, one to four babies are born in a nest of leaves, roots and hair.
Pups can run just an hour after birth and usually stay within the group until the next litter is born.
